Story behind the name
Assur&Mat was born from the North American expansion of Alcor&Mizar, our Quebec-based division known for its deep expertise in the insurance industry and its mission to modernize long-standing practices to better serve entrepreneurs.
Why the name Assur&Mat?
In French, “échec et mat” is the equivalent of “checkmate” — the final, winning move in a game of chess. It’s a powerful metaphor for strategy, clarity, and confidence — and it reflects what we offer our clients: sharp, decisive solutions in a complex insurance world.
And “Mat” also holds personal meaning. It’s a tribute to Anne Martel, co-founder of Assur&Mat, and her father, Jacques Martel, a pioneer in the Quebec insurance world. Back in 1992, he created the brand name Assur&Mat — a visionary blend of “assurance” (insurance) and Martel, the family name. That name lived on through decades of rebranding, eventually becoming Martel&Martel.
Today, Assur&Mat returns — renewed by a new generation and backed by decades of experience — with the same mission: to bring smarter, more human, and more strategic insurance solutions to clients across all of North America.
